Locusts of the 13/17 year cycle variety Our area south of KC was particularly plagued by the simultaneous hatching of the 13 and 17 year locusts. .Up Close and Personal They were plentiful and relatively harmless to our vegetation. Some orchards reported damage. They fed on tree twigs, gnawing on the ends of branches about one foot from the tip. The ends of the branches would break off leaving the yard cluttered with these one foot long twigs. The noise in the evening was deafening. The dogs chased them and ate them in prodigious quantities. Normally, they stayed in the trees, but sometimes you would get hit by one as you walked in the yard or field. The worst of the plague lasted about three weeks.
