Sweetie Has Knee Surgery

About a month ago Sweetie had rapid onset of some lameness.

The local vet determined that she has Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD), and put her on a cortisone drug and recommended that she take Glucosamine HCL and Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate.

A month passed and the lameness persisted. Her symptoms were that she would be stiff legged in the left leg after resting and would sometimes hold the leg up for a minute or two.

We asked to be referred to a specialist to see about total hip replacement (THR) surgery.

We went to see Dr. Riley on 10/25/99 (Monday) at the Veterinary Specialists of KC at 103rd and Metcalf.

Dr. Riley determined that although Sweetie has CHD, she wasn't displaying the typical symptoms associated with same and found that her knee was swollen and may feel a bit "loose".

We had her X-rayed and Dr. Riley suggested that he do exploratory surgery.

We agreed and he found a torn (probably cruciate) ligament that he was able to stitch back together with nylon sutures.

She came home on Tuesday and is now facing 6 weeks of confinement and 10 more week of gradual return to full activity.

She's sore and tired today (Wednesday), but otherwise doing fine.

Poor Sweemie!
